What concerns me in recent debates on the list is the threatened
separation of these fields, usually at the expense of philosophy. The
accusation that philosophy is 'jargon' or self-indulgent both seem
highly problematic to me. This is not to say philosophy can't be those
things, or that we should complacently affirm philosophy as it is
(which is one way to not be philosophical). Also, it seems to me to
pose an opposition that supposes film itself is not a site of
philosophy. Obviously there are philosophical filmmakers, such as
Michael Haneke or Abbas Kiarostami to stay with contemporary examples,
but then something about film itself also poses philosophical
questions.
May the unhappy marriage continue
