This is not really a point about the question of singing itself, but I
notice you refer to "singers in Cherbourg who can't know they're singing
since there is no alternative in their world."
Is it really necessarily true that they cannot know they are singing just
because there is no alternative?
An analogy might be drawn between this and breathing, for instance; i
cannot stop breathing or i would die, yet i know now that i am breathing.
Even living itself may be another example; i know i am alive although there
is no alternative state (if we assuime death is not a state, but rather the
absence of any being).
