Dear Learned Colleagues,
I like to share this message connection with an earlier posting on 8/1/2005
(see below), we may need to think about setting up a technical committee
on Geohazards which has also been expressed by a few I got in touch with.
Many adverse events these days like floods, landslides etc all round the
world need our immediate attention. Thank you for your support.
Warm regards,
Parminder Singh PEng MIEM

Dear Mr Singh,
Thank you for your message. As far as I am aware, Geohazards has not been
suggested as a TC to ISSMGE in the past. The closest thing in the regi of
ISSMGE is the Joint Technical Committee on Landslides (JTC1) chaired by
Prof. Robin Fell. The reason for not having a TC on geoehazards might be
that it involves so many other disciplines besides geotechnical
engineering.
In the aftermath of the recent tsunami disaster, there definitely seems to
be a need for centralised information and guidelines for different types of
geohazards. This issue should be taken up in the next ICSMGE in Osaka in
September.
The NGI involvement in the recent tsunami has been through the activities
of the tsunami modelling group in International Centre for Geohazards
(www.geohazards.no). So far our activities have been focused on providing
public and journalist with information about what happened. We have also
done a preliminary simulation of the event, the results of which are posted
on our web site. There is no doubt that this event will generate a lot
research activity in the coming years, especially in the area of early
warning systems. It is of outmost importance that the international
organisations with expertise in the area pull their resources together and
cooperate is anything useful and practical is to be achieved.
with best regards,
Farrokh
Chair, TC32 ISSMGE

Greetings Dr Nadim,
I put out this posting (below) on some info and had no one offering
directions. I am pleased that I have found NGI and saw a section on
Geohazards leading to some info on tsunamis. May I ask if NGI had
taken Geohazards to ISSMGE to be included as a TC before.
But I suppose there are so many issues like funding, management etc
which one cannot build overnight.
Is NGI involved in the recent tsunami in any way?
Warm regards,
Parminder

Dear Learned Colleagues,
I am currently helping to organise reconstruction efforts together with
Engineers Without Borders International and the Institution of Engineers
Malaysia. There is some info available on topics on the EWB website such
as agriculture, water, security, sanitation, shelter and transportation.
This may not be all.
In the geotech area, this area itself is wide as I went through each of
the technical committee of ISSMGE. I was basically looking for one like
geohazards where I can imagine I can find some contacts for advice etc
and need not approach a whole range of people.
I think it may well be worth thinking one for huge disasters and itself
a new disciplinary and technical area for Geohazards & Reconstruction.
I am sure there will be some involvement from the other committees like
already one on landslides.
Perhaps if you like to share some views on this and how your specialising
field can contribute.
Sincerely,
Parminder Singh PEng MIEM
