SUCCESS FACTORS IN INFORMAL LEARNING

A CONFERENCE TO EXPLORE ENGAGING AND MOTIVATING YOUNG ADULTS THROUGH LITERACY, LANGUAGE AND NUMERACY

Wednesday 14 December 2005, London

The Young Adults Learning Partnership (YALP) is a joint initiative between NIACE and The National Youth Agency. The Partnership researches and develops effective approaches to learning and personal development among young adults (aged 16 to 25) on the margins of education, training and employment, with the purpose of fostering their capability and their integration as young workers, parents and citizens.

Earlier this year, YALP completed work on an NRDC (the National Research and Development Centre for Adult Literacy and Numeracy) research project, Success factors in informal learning: young adults' experiences of literacy, language and numeracy. This event is to launch the final report of the project, and provide an opportunity to reflect on and explore policy and practice in seeking to engage young adult learners in literacy, language and numeracy provision, and the particular contribution that informal and community-based learning has to make.

There will be opportunities to learn in small and large groups, to exchange ideas and experiences, and to network. Workshops and discussion sessions will highlight examples of effective and innovative practice in the provision of literacy, language and numeracy learning for young adults, focussing on:

	*	Effective strategies for embedding literacy, language and numeracy
	*	Creating learning programmes and resources to engage and motivate
	*	Making books and reading exciting
	*	Tailoring learning and recognising achievement
	*	Personal and social development
	*	The learner's voice in shaping learning

The conference is aimed at practitioners, managers, researchers and policy makers working with young adult learners in all sectors, including the youth service, further education colleges, voluntary and community groups, local authorities, the youth justice field, training providers, Learning and Skills Councils and IAG providers.
