Dear Marmers & ECS'ers
Please find below details of two Lectureship Posts at the University of
Wales, Bangor. One post is in Animal Behaviour, the other post is in
Marine Biology/Zoology.
Neither are specifically marine mammal oriented, although marine mammal
people with suitable skills and experience may be eligible. It is almost
certain that a strong research profile and an ability to teach across a
wide variety of undergraduate and postgraduate courses will be necessary in
order for applicants to stand a chance of being shortlisted.
One of the postgraduate courses delivered by the University of Wales,
Bangor, is an MSc in Marine Mammal Science.
Best regards
John Goold

Department: SCHOOL OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES
Post Title: Lectureship in Animal Behaviour
Salary: Lecturer Grade A/B: £23,643 - £35,883 p.a.
Closing Date: 05-08-2005
Post Description:
Applications are invited for the post of Lecturer in Animal Behaviour.
Expertise in vertebrate behaviour is particularly welcomed, but those
working in other areas of behaviour are also encouraged to apply.
The successful applicant will have published relevant papers in
high-ranking international journals and demonstrated successful
participation in research-grant capture. In addition to teaching more
general aspects of zoology at lower levels, the post requires teaching that
exploits the candidate's specialized knowledge and interests at final
Honours and postgraduate levels. The post will require successful
progression in research through high-quality publication and major grant
capture.
The successful applicant will join an exceptionally broad team of
evolutionary ecologists, fisheries biologists and environmental scientists
drawn from across the Schools of Biological Sciences, Ocean Sciences and
Agriculture and Forest Sciences, linked to local branches of the
Environment Agency, Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, and Countryside Council
for Wales and integrated through the new Centre for Environmental Sciences.
Salary will be on the appropriate grade according to experience

Department: SCHOOL OF OCEAN SCIENCES
Post Title: Lectureship in Marine Biology / Marine Zoology
Salary: Lecturer Grade A: £23,643 - £27,116 p.a.
Closing Date: 05-08-2005
Post Description:
Applications are invited for a Lectureship in Marine Biology/ Marine
Zoology. The School of Ocean Sciences has interests in marine ecology,
applied marine biology, dynamical oceanography, geological oceanography and
marine biogeochemistry and places particular emphasis on interdisciplinary
research. It is one of the largest academic centres for marine science in
the UK with a total of 28 academic staff and a new 35 m shelf sea research
vessel. In the last Research Assessment Exercise, the School was graded 4
and rated 'excellent' in the Teaching Quality Assessment by HEFCW.
Candidates of proven research ability in any aspect of marine biology or
marine zoology will be considered. The School has extensive aquarium
facilities, including tropical and cold water aquaria, aquarium systems for
hydrothermal vent organisms, quarantine aquaria, larval rearing facilities
and a phytoplankton culture unit. Specialised laboratories include those
for nutrition, microbiology, genetics, electron microscopy and stable
isotope analysis. Details of existing staff and their research interests
are available on the School web site: http://www.sos.bangor.ac.uk
The marine biology staff contribute courses to two single honours B.Sc.
degrees, two joint honours degrees and three M.Sc. degrees. On appointment
the candidate would be expected to contribute to the teaching of courses on
these existing degrees and to develop new modules in marine vertebrate
zoology. Applications from candidates who have an active interest in
seagoing research and the utilisation of the School's research vessel are
particularly welcomed.
