Hi Caroline,
I completed an MA in Drawing at Camberwell in 2004,
having written my thesis on a very specific 'drawing'
method. One of the most subjectively favourable
conceptual definitions of drawing I found (which I
included in my research) was Dr Angela Eames' text
which essentially centres around how drawing is or can
be anything that is first conceptually conceived and
not necessarily made 'concrete' afterwards. The
conceptual being synonymous with the intellect and
imagination, or anything relating to the thinking or
creative mind.
Eames successfully argues that 'drawing' in the mind
is the starting point of every concrete/physical act
of drawing (mental or material), therefore drawings
can remain conceptual/virtual/imaginary or transfered
into concrete, communal existence. I think in that
sense, Eames' views on drawing are perhaps the most
CONTEMPORARY, INCLUSIVE and PROFOUND declarations of
what drawing is, can or might be.
Although Eames works with computers herself, she is
exceptionally broad-minded in her understanding of
drawing practice (this is reflected in her past and
present students works which range from traditional
and contemporary media). I prefer the 'cutting blade'
as my contemporary drawing tool and am still battling
with narrow perceptions and deep prejudices (despite
the fact that collage/scissors revolutionised the
history of modern drawing/painting irreversibly).
I would recommend interviewing Dr Eames or taking a
look at this:
