I live and work in Japan. Sumi is Chinese ink and it's used on absorbent
paper. When I first started working in this medium I used the accepted
translation of the term 'suibokuga' - ink or brush painting. However, as I
have been developing my work I find there is much in common with drawing -
the interest in mark making, line and exploration of subject matter. In fact
a Japanese designer recently translated what I was doing as ink drawing.
So there is an ambiguity here. I myself call it sumi work-ducking the issue?
In Japanese there is the word 'shita gaki' which means the line drawing done
underneath a painting. A direct translation of 'suibokuga' is pictures in
water and sumi.
The word to paint 'ekaku' is not used with sumi as far as I know.
>8. ANY comments you like to make about Drawing.
For me, at it's core it's exploration.
