Dear Patricia Cain
My research as well as my doctor thesis, was exactly around this subject.
I’m an artist by formation and teach drawing at the architecture faculty, so
I focused my investigation on “drawing as the thinking process of the
architect”, not only because of these reasons, but also because taking
architectural drawings as a case study (and I mean study and free drawings,
not coded drawings or diagrams), they stand precisely in this intersection
where thinking, creativity that is space related, art and communication co-
exist.
And a very specific thinking process and communication that is, outside the
verbal interactions.
My approach is more phenomenological and philosophical but the research on
the brain and particularly the visual cortex interests me very much.
Since then I’ve been very interested at the phenomenon of drawing as an
instrument and communication process that is so clear and precise but also
open and imaginative and establishes a communicative world for itself,
without words or verbal concepts.
We can go on speaking about the theme if you like.
My books are written in Portuguese so it will probably make them unavailable
to you.
Also I’ve been looking for investigators from other areas, particularly
brain research of the visual cortex, but it tends to be an area which is
restricted to it’s own scope.
Yours
Ana Leonor
