Dear Timothy and all,
The subject and practice of automatic drawing interest me very much.
I have recently gotten myself into the realm of automatic drawing as
an artist, and will share this work when it is uploaded to my website
(does not exist at the moment).
The references already made on the list are helpful to me too, Thanks.
Timothy, the work of Les Automatistes, Quebec, 1950s-60s, could
interest you. These artists were influenced by Surrealism of Paris
and New York. How and why did they apply this practice to their
experience? How did it transform or translate. They called for a
society of spontaneous action, sensuality, and this would lead to a
life of magic. Did this succeed? They had a huge impact on the
culture of Quebec.
check out. Wikipedia, for founder Paul-Emile Borduas.
What keeps coming up for me as well is the unfortunate duality
presented in contemporary art scene that state 'sanity' and seem to
distinguish the insane. This comes up or is absent especially around
the surrealists. Makes to question the 'clinical' practices of art
making.
When I was in Paris a few years ago I was thrilled by the exhibitions
at the gallery of Halle St.Pierre, Montmartre. This gallery carries
on with Max Fourny's collection, and contemporary Art Brut, raw art.
Another area of Surealism. Halle St. Pierre has a bare-bones website,
there could be some references there for you.
I hope this helps,
