Hi all. I think that this question of drawing as research and
or drawing versus research or any other way you frame it, is one
of the
most interesting debates in the area of drawing and I am not
surprised that its raising of the topic here has rippled the
waters. As artists seek education and accreditation in an increasingly academic
environment (MA and PhD degrees). The requirement for them to fit
the academic slipper of "Research" increases. Like most artists I
can easily see all my drawing activities as research, as in finding
out,
however academic conceptions and of the "rigors of research" if
applied too dogmatically, can I believe do violence to practice
based art /
research. I refer you to a University of Hertfordshire web site:
http://www.herts.ac.uk/artdes1/research/papers/wpades/index.html
which provides
an abundance of opinion and food for thought in this regard. With regard to
current
discussion I feel it is uncomfortably dualistic when the activity
of drawing is divided into "drawing research" and "drawing in
general",
unless "drawing research" refers to theorising about drawing.
The above point is not meant to be offensive to anyone and I think
in the context of this web discussion it is a pity that people feel
that
honest opinions are "abrasive". Regarding the format, since this
is not a presentation of papers for peer review I think it is
inappropriate
that however loosely formed contributions/arguments be slapped down
as I experienced a little while back. That kind of thing usually
results in a spate of unsubscribe requests. Personally I am
fascinated by the rich variety of opinion. Tom
