Hello
On the discussion of Jac Saorsa an Xavier Pick, I would venture that they
are both right in the way that drawing is, in itself an investigation of
visual reality, both sensible, creative, and non linear (artistic) and
ordered, systematic, clear (whatever adjectives to describe a systematic
approach).
It also conveys a communication (bypassing verbalization) that goes from the
intensity of incision of the line through several levels and also, even, to
the intention of representation (which is not the only aim of drawing but an
interesting one when one thinks about why do we need to represent).
Myself I’m in this in-between situation it seems you both are yourselves,
being an artist and interested in the process of drawing (the exploration of
the limits of drawing – the line, the support, the indirect register, etc.)
as an artistic expression, but also made a PhD in visual
communication/drawing and I’m extremely interested and challenged by the
whys of drawing, beginning with why do we draw or the interesting statement
of Wittgenstein, “wouldn’t we consider a case of lunacy the man who
recognising in a drawing the portrait of N.N. would scream “Look, it’s Mr.
N. N.” .
Well, we could, maybe, go on discussing these topics. Between the – drawing
of drawing, and thinking about drawing.
Yours
Ana Leonor
