I have been researching young children's drawing and marks (two - eight years of age) with a colleague for the past 12 years. We have focused on their own mathematical representations (which we term 'mathematical graphics'). We are also exploring the inter-relationship between all of young children's visual representations (and multi-modality) and their highly creative responses through their own marks - only possible when teachers truly value the child's 'voice'.
We are continuously delighted and amazed at their graphics and view and assess all of their representations from a positive perspective!
Incidentally one of of the findings of my Masters was of the very high levels of cognitive challenge through child-initiated art.
I expect you are aware of the Roehampton conference 'Art in Early Childhood' in July this year?

I hope these will be helpful to you - I have been interested in children using sketchbooks for some time. Renate, the widow of Charles Keeping (the influential illustrator of books such as The Highwayman') has dedicated her home to exhibiting his work (and her amazing artworks too). We have used the gallery on several borough projects - hence the name 'Keeping Books'.
The wolf thing just shows how children's research towards an artwork might progress.
I also have an unfinished bit of my doc thesis (long way to go!) that looks at how we might assess drawings as narratives in a generous and positive way rather than the deficit model often used (I will send part of it too if you wish)
I'm working with a group of teachers at the moment but even though they agree with the idea of keeping sketchbooks, they find it ever so difficult to manage.
