CALL FOR BOOK CHAPTERS

Submission Deadline: March 31, 2005
Human Computer Interaction Research in Web Design and Evaluation

A book edited by: Dr. Panayiotis Zaphiris, Centre for HCI
Design, City University, London, UK

Dr. Sri Kurniawan, School of Informatics, University of
Manchester, Manchester, UK

Overall Objectives of the Book

The objective of this book is to look at the topic of Web design
in a new direction. The majority of existing books on this
topic have been focusing primarily on the technical dimensions
(programming languages, hardware and software needs) of Web
design. Few books touch on the user aspect of Web design and
interaction. In addition, this book will try to provide an
academic/research direction to Web usability.

Because humans are an important participant in Web interaction
and a significant factor contributing to successful Web design
is user involvement throughout the design and evaluation
processes, there is a need for a unified view of the
user-related topics that surround Web design.

This book will point out that beyond the technical aspects of
Web design, we need to systematically take into account human
interaction and activity, and the completely renewed social and
cultural environments that Web environments and interfaces are
calling for and technologies are now capable of delivering. The
general goal is to discuss the basis of a broad framework for
the development and management of Web environments, enriched
with contributions from domains as diverse as Web design,
information systems, psychology, sociology, artificial
intelligence, e-learning and many others.

The Target Audience

University educators and educators in general; university
administrators; researchers; lecturers of HCI and user-centred
design; Web system managers; instructional designers; general
audience with an interest in HCI and Web design. This book will
be structured in such a way so that it can act as a core
textbook in HCI and Web development courses.

Recommended Topics

Recommended topics include but are not limited to the following:

- Introduction: Introduction to HCI and User-Centred Design and
their application to Web design

- Humans as Web Users: human abilities and limitations
(cognitive, perceptual, motor) and their effect on efficient use
of the Web; cognitive psychology and its application to Web
design

- Analysis: Query-based techniques (interviews, focus groups,
surveys) and Web design; Task Analysis, users, context and
requirements and their application to Web design; Personas

14-18 November 2005: This is the second call for European
Conference on Complex Systems 2005 (ECCS'05) Paris (Cite
Internationale Universitaire)

TOWARDS A SCIENCE OF COMPLEX SYSTEMS

Complex systems, as networks of interactive entities, are
studied through a rapidly increasing mass of data in all
domains. At the same time, these domains share a lot of new and
fundamental theoretical questions. This situation is especially
favourable for developing the new science of complex systems in
an interdisciplinary way.

There are two kinds of interdisciplinarity within complex
systems. The first begins with a particular complex system and
addresses a variety of questions coming from its particular
domain and points of view. The second begins with questions that
are fundamental to complex systems in general. The first leads
to domain-specific interdisciplinary fields such as cognitive
science. The new science of complex system belongs to a second
kind of interdisciplinarity. It starts from fundamental open
questions relevant to many domains, and searches for methods to
deal with them.

These two kinds of interdisciplinarity are complementary and
interdependent: any advance in one is valuable for the other.
The science of complex systems will develop through a constantly
renewed process of reconstructing data from models with a
permanent interaction between the two kinds of
interdisciplinarity. The reconstruction of the dynamics of
complex systems presents a major challenge to modern science but
it is becoming increasingly accessible through an accumulating
mass of data, combined with the increasing power of computers
leading to theoretical advances in understanding.

ECCS is the first conference organized by the new European
Complex System Society. It aims to bring together all scientists
working on complex systems and wishing to widen the interchange
of questions, concepts, models and theories beyond the specific
points of view developed in more specialized conferences. It
aims also to foster a more interconnected community, creating
through its interactions the science of complex system as a
rapidly growing field.

18 May 2005: Conference on Accessible Biometrics Sponsors:
RNIB, International Association for Biometrics, European
Biometrics Forum

DTI Conference Centre, 1 Victoria St, London SW1

Biometrics offers the opportunity of authenticating people by
who they are (using their fingerprints, face images, voice
patterns, etc) - rather than what they remember (e.g. passwords)
or what they carry (cards). Recently, there has been a surge of
interest with these technologies being proposed for passports
and ID cards. Other systems are in use for PC security, payment
and even for 'clocking in' at work.

Using a biometric in a specific service will help some disabled
people, while others may be disadvantaged. Drawing upon the
limited experience in the field, this conference aims to bring
together technology suppliers, designers of systems, operators,
researchers, standards bodies and people with disabilities to
propose realistic solutions.

Our vision is for groups to go away from this meeting committed
to co-developing innovative methodologies and solutions that
will support disabled people in their use of these new systems -
perhaps even identifying novel applications that will extend the
usage of these technologies.

The programme will cover an overview of biometric technologies,
an assessment of the market opportunities (and in particular
those in the financial sector), usability issues, testing, the
role of standards, use by elderly, etc. There will be
opportunities for networking and a final open discussion on
future directions.

We intend not to charge invited participants, but ask that you
send in your expression of interest as soon as possible.

1 April 2005: 'THROWING AWAY POLICIES' SEMINAR UPDATE

Why does our throwaway culture persist, despite longstanding
concern? With household waste still increasing each year, what
strategies and policies are required to counter the prevalence
of short-lived and disposable products? The aim of this
important seminar is to explore the potential role of government
in finding solutions to the throwaway society.

Contributors include Joanna Collins (Convenor of the Sustainable
Consumption Roundtable), legal experts Cowan Ervine (University
of Dundee) and Dr Christian Twigg-Flesner (University of Hull),
Claire Wilton (Friends of the Earth), Barbara Herridge
(WasteWatch), Ben Shaw (Green Alliance) and political party
representatives. Themes to be addressed will include waste
reduction, sustainable consumption green claims, eco-design,
integrated product policy, resource productivity, ecological tax
reform, producer/shared responsibility, consumer protection,
extended warranties and consumer education.

The seminar is free, but advance booking is required.
Participants requiring lunch (organic/fairly traded) must
reserve a place before 23rd March. Limited funds are available
to reimburse travel and accommodation (details on booking form).

RESEARCH WORKSHOP - Thursday 31st March (pm)

What do we know about product life spans and what do we need to
find out? The aim of this half day workshop preceding the
seminar is (1) to develop a research agenda on issues relating
to product life spans covering consumer, design, industry,
environmental and marketing perspectives and (2) to enable
participants to explore shared interests, develop funding
proposals and identify opportunities for collaboration.

BOOK REVIEWS

Borja de Mozota, Brigitte. 2002. Design management. Paris:
Editions d'Organisation.

The title of this book conveys its contents exactly. It is
organized in three major parts, the fundamentals of design; the
values created and delivered through design, something more than
touched upon already in the first part; and, thirdly, the
practice of design. The reader should not overlook the appendix,
dealing with theoretical approaches to design, describing models
emerging out of aesthetics, psychology, systems analysis,
semiotics, and sociology.

Readers at home with design research or practice will also feel
at home with the first two chapters, discussing the history and
the concept and applications of design, the different meanings
of design -- as a substantive, a verb -- developed into a useful
process discussion. If the terrain must be conventional, the
author succeeds in highlighting salient facts and issues in a
lucid and nicely systemized way. The third chapter of this first
part deals with design contributions to an organization and
already here we learn something about the substantial values
created. The author has compiled two very extensive and
extremely helpful overviews of studies -- one on macro-, the
other on micro-economic effects -- from all over the world
(though mostly from Britain and France), providing hard
arguments for design. A list of the leading design consultancies
in France is one of few hints of the author's and the
publisher's provenience. Part one concludes on the very topic of
design management, with a discussion of its links to management
in general and quality management in particular.

Borja de Mozota argues, most succinctly in her conclusion, that
design contributes to the differentiation of products, thus to
marketing; to the coordination of corporate activities, thus to
innovation; and to strategy, thus to transforming the company
and its activities. The first dimension relies upon aesthetics
and perception, the second upon semiotics and the creation of a
coherent impression of the corporation among customers and
stakeholders in general, the third on systems theory. The whole
book is permeated with useful, well-organized and well-argued
descriptions of various perspectives on the many characteristics
and aspects associated with design; thus design might equate
with cognition, emotion, message, or relation. The reader should
be grateful: here are ready-made bullet points for any number of
PowerPoint presentations. The twenty pages devoted to innovation
cannot of course deal with this subject (my own specialty) in
depth but succeed admirably in introducing important features
linking design to innovation, such as the emergence of a
dominant design, the transfer of technology with designers as
intermediaries, and the design of modular product architectures.
The strategy vantage point brings about brand and other aspects
of visual design, not forgoing verbal and workspace design, as
means to shape and communicate an organization's identity.

The third part, on the practice of design, is organized
bottom-up, starting with managing design projects, moving on to
the overall management of the design function, landing finally
in strategic issues. A detailed case study (where a consultancy
is involved) informs the chapter on the project level. At the
next level, the place and organization of a design department
are discussed, and the importance of securing its relations to
other functional departments, such as marketing and product
development, highlighted. Questions on human resources,
information systems, and budgeting are issues placed in the
strategy chapter. They are preceded by discussions of a number
of standard strategy issues, like generic strategies and
corporate culture, always from a design perspective.

The book is much richer than a summary can convey. It is
interspersed with portraits of designers and their activities
and views which offer illustrations, much as case studies, of
salient points, but since they are cut from real design life,
the reader is given a more complete view of design as something
that, like all corporate activity, only in retrospect and
artificially may be reduced to bullet points and how-to lists. A
survey of how design is integrated into French firms,
comprehending 108 companies, is summed up in a table of just one
page. This and six clippings from a French newspaper over eight
years to highlight the changing perception of design in the
business press are about the only hints of the origins of the
author. The scope is truly international, reflecting the
author's positions as member of the Board of Advisors of the
Design Management Institute in Boston since 1995, as chair of
its Research Advisor Board since 1998, and as having leading
positions at several French universities as well as the European
Academy of Design. Thus the literature list contains some five
hundred references; useful for practitioners as well as for
researchers though practitioners might well do with just Borja
de Mozota's masterly book.

I have two question marks. The microscopic one is that an
established term in psychology of German origin, Gestalt, is
through and through, even in the reference list, called
'Gelstalt'. The other one is the description of the 'design
process' as a linear one (though the 'rugby method' with
concurrent activities is described in the innovation chapter).
The argument that not all design projects make for a linear
description but rather a synthetic approach, the designer being
part of problem space, has been formulated most profoundly by
Schon and Argyris, evoking the 'reflective practitioner'
(likewise, the 'innovation process' was originally seen as
linear; now we are in the sixth generation of increasingly
interactive processes). It would probably be outside the scope
of the book to introduce this alternative in full but it might
have been mentioned; given the author's faculty for providing
eloquent explanations to complex conundrums, a succinct half
page might have served well.

All in all, an excellent book, the definitive guide to design
management for a long time.
