Child is a lot different to someone trying to obtain a false
identity.............There are some very determined people out there.

I was filling in a passport form last night. The supporting documents
for a child's application include both the child's long birth
certificate plus either the mother's passport valid at the time of the
birth or her own birth certificate. In the case of a father applying on
behalf of the child he also has to provide a marriage certificate. So
although the registry offices may not ask for proof of identity (I think
I completed and signed a very simple request form) the passport office
require more evidence.

I e-mailed this very issue to the list recently when I discovered that
you need no proof of identity.......as we said - an address - then a
driving licence and heyho the world is the illegal fraudster's oyster!

Subject: Issue of birth certifications

I have recently had cause to obtain a full version of my daughter's
birth certificate in order to allow us to apply for a passport for her.

Given that, for a child under 16, the only identification required in
order to obtain a passport (for children born before a particular date)
is a copy of their full birth certificate I have been extremely
concerned to discover that no id is required when requesting a copy of
said birth certifate to prove who it is who is asking for the copy.

Yes, we have had to provide the precise date of birth dd/mm/yy and know
in which area of the UK she was registered but this is now, in
Warwickshire for certain, becoming available for anyone to find out via
a search on the web where volunteers are busy loading all the
information so that one can swiftly search cross-county.

I accept that such information has always been available but the
increase in availability electronically of lists of who exists and the
increase in identity theft and other issues gives me great cause for
concern. Am I over- reacting here?
