This is the first official attempt to recognise Odinga's contribution in the
anti-imperialist struggle in Kenya.
At the same time, following the coverage on Pio Gama Pinto in the current
issue of "Awaaz" (more details from Zahid Rajan <[log in to unmask]>),
this is further recognition of the contribution Pinto made to the
anti-colonial and anti-imperialist struggles in Africa and India.

Inaugural Jaramogi Lecture / award ceremony
The Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation aspires to uphold the values and
virtues of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga. Annually, the Foundation hosts a memorial
lecture with internationally acclaimed speakers who bring forward new ideas,
address a wide variety of topics and stimulate discussions in the spirit and
reflective manner that were typified by Jaramogi
This year's lecture will be, world renowned, distinguised academic and
prolific writer, Dr Ali Mazrui with a lecture topic of 'Africa's Condition
of "Not yet Uhuru': The Balance Sheet
This year, JOOF has also created the "Jaramogi Freedom Award" to honour
jaramogi and to recognize and celebrate the quality of political and
intellectual courage that he admired most specifically in relation to
respect for human rights, pursuit of peace and unity, social justice and
support of people centred development.
The inaugural Jaramogi Freedom award will be awarded to "Pio Gama Pinto",
posthumously. The award seeks to make Africans aware of the conscientious
and courageous acts of significant intellectuals and other leaders and to
encourage the choosing of principles over partisanship - to do what is
right, rather than what is expedient.
This Dinner/ Lecture and Award ceremony will be held on Friday 15th July
2005 at the Nairobi Intercontinental Hotel.
