CALL FOR PAPERS
“Beyond the Battlefields of the Graeco-Roman World” an inter-disciplinary
postgraduate conference at the Faculty of Classics, University of Oxford,
UK, July 2-4 2006.
Ancient warfare and society has received significant attention in recent
years. This is in part a result of the modern focus on the activities
that preceded and followed military engagements. There is also the
questioning of how ancient militia interacted and developed and yet were
separated from their respective ‘civilian’ societies.
This postgraduate colloquium aims to focus on the mechanisms, attitudes
and behaviour of ancient armed forces beyond the context of
the ‘battlefield’ and it invites contributions from the wide range of
disciplines related to the Graeco-Roman World for the cross-fertilization
of ideas and practices.
Amongst subjects proposed: warrior status, recruitment, communications
between commander and state, religious and commemorative practices,
military finance, and prisoners of war.
Professor Brian Campbell and Dr Hans van Wees have kindly agreed to give
plenary papers and chair panels and this conference has also received AHRC
funding.
Abstracts of proposed papers (30 minutes long) should be around 200 words
in length and sent by March 31 2006 to:
Edward Bragg
Wadham College
Oxford, OX1 3PN
