The School of Classics is offering the following awards to suitably
qualified applicants who in September 2006 will begin a programme of
research at the University of St Andrews:
(a) Up to three Doctoral Scholarships (also Known as ‘Home Fee Waivers’):
students will receive a scholarship equivalent to the value of the home
fee, currently £3,085, waived for a maximum of three years (or the part-
time equivalent). Preference will be given to students whose proposed
research falls within the remit of the School’s LOGOS Research Centre,
which promotes research into the systems of knowledge by which Greeks and
Romans organised their understanding and description of the world; but
applications for other fields of research will be considered. A candidate
who is successful in another competition for funding will be permitted to
retain the scholarship. The School may choose to combine these awards with
other awards herein advertised.
Eligibility: any applicant accepted to St Andrews Classics to do a PhD
starting in 2005-6. The awards are open to home and overseas applicants
alike. Home and overseas applicants for MLitt and MPhil are currently
ineligible but this policy is subject to review and such applicants should
certainly tick the relevant box on the PG awards application form if they
wish to be considered.
(b) One Ronald Morton Smith Scholarship of £6000. This award will be
tenable from September 2006 for one year in the first instance. Provided
that the holder makes satisfactory progress with their PhD the award will
be renewable for up to a further two years. In the case of an MLitt or
MPhil student, the award will be tenable for one year or two years
respectively. An MPhil student must demonstrate satisfactory progress in
the Graduate Diploma to merit a second year of the award. Award holders
accepted
Eligibility: any applicant accepted to St Andrews Classics to do a PhD,
MLitt or MPhil starting in 2005-6.
(c) One Guthrie Award of £7,000 per annum plus home fees, available to any
student who will graduate with a St Andrews MA or MLitt in 2006. Provided
that the holder makes satisfactory progress with their PhD the award will
be renewable for up to a further two years. In the case of an MLitt or
MPhil student, the award will be tenable for one year or two years
respectively. An MPhil student must demonstrate satisfactory progress in
the Graduate Diploma to merit a second year of the award.
Eligibility: Applicants for M.Litt, M.Phil or PhDs but they must have
graduated from St Andrews in the year in which the award is to be made.
(d) Up to three Millar-Lyell Awards of £3,000 per annum, available to any
student accepted on to any of our postgraduate programmes. The award will
be tenable for one year in the first instance and, in the case of students
taking the MPhil or PhD may be renewable in subsequent years subject to
satisfactory progress. These awards may be held in conjunction with Home
Fee waivers or other awards herein advertised.
Eligibility: Any student accepted for postgraduate study in the School
(MLitt, MPhil or PhD). The award is open to existing postgraduates in the
School as well as new entrants.
Note: in the case of applicants for the Ronald Morton Smith Scholarship or
Guthrie Award who obtain a full fees and maintenance award from the SAAS,
AHRB or other source, the amount of the award will be £2,000; and if
applicants obtain any other external award, the amount of the School award
will be reduced accordingly, but not below £2,000. Applicants for the
Millar-Lyell awards who are successful with other awards outside the
School should notify the Postgraduate Convenor of the size and duration of
such awards. The School of Classics may reduce the Millar-Lyell award in
cases where the applicant has received ample funding from another body.
The School of Classics achieved a rating of 5 in the last two Research
Assessment Exercises, and has a flourishing research environment,
including a weekly research seminar, in which postgraduates are actively

UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER
CLASSICS AND ANCIENT HISTORY
0.5 TEMPORARY LECTURESHIP IN GREEK LITERATURE
Applications are invited for a 0.5 FTE ten-month lectureship in ancient
Greek literature, running from 19 Sept. 2005 to 18 July 2006. The
principal duty of the successful applicant will be to teach and examine
courses in Greek epic literature. The appointee will be required also to
assist in departmental administration and the pastoral care of students,
and will be expected to take part in the intellectual life of the
discipline and contribute to its research culture. It is envisaged that
the post will attract research-active scholars entering the profession and
hoping to progress to permanent academic positions in the future.
The person appointed will have, or have nearly completed, a PhD or
equivalent on some aspect of ancient classical literature, and will be
able to teach courses in the field of Greek epic.
The appointment will be a 0.5 FTE appointment on the scale £23,643-
£27,116, pro rata for 10 months.
