REWIND | Artists’ Video in the 70’s & 80’s
A full-time PhD studentship
£9K Stipend plus fees per annum
REWIND is a research project that is developing a research resource
that addresses the gap in historical knowledge of the evolution of
electronic media arts in the UK, by investigating specifically the
first two decades of British artists’ works in video. There was a
danger that many of these works may disappear because of their
ephemeral nature and poor technical condition. The project seeks to
determine the best examples of works from the period, conserve and
preserve them, and enable further scholarly activity. An archive,
website, major exhibition and publication will be employed to
disseminate the works to the public and academic community. We now
seek an outstanding individual who wants to undertake a PhD research
programme attached to REWIND. The applicant must propose an
independent research programme that relates to, and adds value to the
research aims, objectives, and outcomes of REWIND. Further details of
the research project are available at http://www.rewind.ac.uk/home.html.
The PhD studentship will be based at the Visual Research Centre
within Dundee Contemporary Arts and at DJCAD, but will also involve
travel and research within the UK and especially with the REWIND
project partners based in London at the Centre for Arts Research
Technology and Education (CARTE), University of Westminster.
Supervision will be provided by Professor Georgina Follett, Professor
Stephen Partridge, (Principal Investigator REWIND), and the REWIND
Research Fellow, Dr Jackie Hatfield.
The post would ideally suit someone with an MA in a fine art related
disciplines with an interest in critical, theoretical and historical
issues in time based art, video art, media art, filmmaking, or
installation, with applicants from other arts backgrounds being
considered. You must be an excellent communicator, be able to
demonstrate the commitment and aptitude required for postgraduate
research and have an interest in the cultural aspects of moving image
art. It is a condition of the stipend that the holder fulfils the
AHRC eligibility criteria for PhD studentships and makes an
application for a PhD project studentship to the AHRC within 12
months of registration.
