Robert Crawford's book _Identifying Poets_ (Edinburgh, 1993) explores this
issue. Though the title may suggest that it is a trainspotter's guide, the
essays - from a Bakhtinian perspective on Ashbery, Frost, Kuppner,
MacDiarmid, MacGill-Eain, Murray &c - deal with 'ideas of self and territory
in 20th century poetry', as the jacket says. It's interesting stuff.
