Hello everyone. I'm new to the list. I'm not a British poet though in a few
months time I will at least be a resident (for the long term). My partner
is moving to an academic position in Kent. Shearsman have recently
published two of my books if you require further introduction.
Re. the recent discussion, I tend to agree with Tony about piper payers.
I've co-edited little press magazines (e.g. the first 'Surfers' Paradise'
with John Forbes) where we printed whoever we wanted to. But it wasn't
subsidised. Years later I was poetry editor for 'Meanjin', a Melbourne
based journal of politics and culture. I was still pretty much free to
publish what I wanted to though the mag itself had certain parameters and i
found myself printing a wider range of things that I would have done
in 'surfers'. I was under no pressure to 'represent' minorities. When I
started though, I worried (unnecessarily it turned out) about how well I
would represent women. But though the mag received probably 70 percent
material from men by the time I'd weeded out the really bad pieces things
largely evened up. It would have been impossible to satisfy minorities in
general however. But I justified this to myself, figuring I'd only be in
the position for three to five years and that someone completely different
would take over (which is what happened). But I'm blathering, and nobody
asked . . .
