Statistics course: Analysing Biological and Environmental Data

Location: CoRPI, Klaipeda University, Lithuania

Event Type: Training Course

Event Date: 2005-07-11

End Date: 2005-07-15

Event Description:

Analysing Biological and Environmental Data - Using Multivariate Analysis and

Multivariate Time Series Analysis

Full details of this course can be found at:

http://www.marbef.org/modules.php?name=Calendar&file=index&type=view&eid=145

Highland Statistics Ltd. provides statistics courses at various places in Europe,

South-America, Mexico, Africa and Canada.

These courses are especially designed for biological and environmental scientists.

The aim of the course is to give the participants sufficient statistical knowledge

to apply the appropriate statistical techniques to their data, and give an

interpretation of the results. The course provides:

1. a revision of basic statistics,

2. a working knowledge of techniques which are commonly used in biology,

3. an introduction to recently developed methods,

4. a discussion of practical problems and solutions which cannot be found in

standard statistical textbooks, and

5. hands-on experience through application of the techniques on biological data

sets, using statistical software on a computer.

This course contains four modules, namely (i) data exploration, (ii) multivariate

analysis, (iii) time series analysis and (iv) case studies. The second module

consists of multivariate analysis methods. We discuss various techniques (e.g. CCA,

RDA, db-RDA), and explain when to apply which multivariate technique. In the third

module, various time series methods are used, e.g. common trend analysis and sudden

changes. In the fourth module, course attendants will apply all methods on case

studies and/or their own data sets. The first three modules also contain various

computer exercises.

More information and course details can be downloaded from the leaflet.
