Special Session at the 2005 MMLA Convention (Milwaukee, WI)
Traditionally, the Romantic period has been defined by attempts to
transcend loss and to ground experience or identity in the recovery of
individual and cultural memories. This session will discuss the ways in
which particular Romantic-era texts appear to engage in theoretical
concerns that are more usually associated with various modernisms,
exploring representations of trauma, exile, the abject, loss and
forgetfulness during the early nineteenth century that resist, critique or
disable the possibility of recuperative gestures, or that open towards more
radical notions of futurity. Areas of inquiry may include, but are not
limited to, the historical novel, painting, music, narrative or lyric
poetry, drama, and theoretical or critical texts.
