CHATTERTON LECTURE ON ENGLISH POETRY
Byron, Conversation and Discord
Dr Jane Stabler, University of St Andrews
The lecture will look at the ways in which Byron is at once the most
conversational of English Romantic poets and also the poet whose writing most
disturbs the eighteenth-century ideals of equality, politeness, and 'a calm,
quiet interchange of sentiments' in conversation. Simultaneously Byron's work
complicates philosophical and musical notions of harmony, which rely on the
exclusion, or resolution of discordant or jarring elements.
These lectures are free of charge - no tickets will be issued. All seats will be
allocated on a strict first-come, first-served basis. The first 100 audience
members arriving at the Academy will be offered a seat in the Lecture Room
where this event will take place. The next 50 people to arrive will be offered
a seat in our Overflow Room, which has a video and audio link to the Lecture
Room. Please arrive in good time.
