This might be slightly off subject here but some readers might be interested
(or know someone wo is!). The Dept of Computing and Informatics at the
University of Lincoln, has been awarded a grant from the recently created
EPSRC/BBSRC funded SPARC (Strategic Promotion of Ageing Research Capacity)
initiative. The grant is to support a pilot study into how multimodal (sound
and vision) technologies can be deployed as augmented realities in the home
to support “ageing-in-place” – the idea that older people continue to live
in their own homes rather than in specialist care facilities.
We have a vacancy for a researcher (grade B) to work on this grant, starting
on 1st Feb 2006 for 12 Months. The appointed researcher will contribute to
the design, development and evaluation of an augmented reality system as
well as assisting with the recruitment of, and consultation with, focus
groups of older people in the Lincolnshire area.
We are interested in receiving applications from suitably-qualified
candidates with appropriate experience in one or more of the following
areas: augmented reality, interaction with multimodal systems (with
particular emphasis on aural displays), ubiquitous systems and smart homes,
Wizard-of-Oz evaluations. We are particularly interested in hearing from
candidates who may have had previous experience in the development and
evaluation of technology for older user groups. Additionally, the appointed
researcher will be expected to engage with end-users throughout the project
and therefore an aptitude for investigating social aspects of technology is
considered essential. Starting salary is £20,202.
The Department of Computing and Informatics, located in recently refurbished
accommodation on the new Brayford Pool in the heart of historic Lincoln, has
a rapidly expanding research focus. Initial informal enquiries about this
vacancy may be made to Dr. Shaun Lawson, email: [log in to unmask] For

Best wishes,
Shaun.
