Dear Colleagues,
One of the faculty in University of Maryland's (United States)Art History
Department is trying to locate two catalogs. I have been unsuccessful in
tracking these down. I have tried all the usual bibliographic suspects and
consulted online catalogs for various museums and libraries in Great
Britain. I suspect these are small publications and may be treated as
ephemera that have not been catalogued. In any event, I am appealing to the
collective knowledge of ARLIS /UK + Ireland members. The following is the
professor's description of what he is seeking:
" Antoine Dubost ran an announcement on the front page of 'The Morning
Chronicle' of London, a weekly, starting on May 2, 1807, and continuing with
slight variations, for two months, as follows: "The Exhibition of the
Historical Paintings of Damocles, Venus and Adonis, &c. &c by Mr. A. Dubost,
will open on Monday next at his house, no. 65 Pall-mall, from Nine in the
Morning till Dusk -- Admittance 1 s -- Catalogues included."
The professor saw the announcements at Library of Congress, microfilm 2628.
The other catalogue is also cited in "The Morning Chronicle," May 28, 1810,
p. 1: "Exhibition of an extensive View of Hyde Park, on a Sunday, executed
upon a scale of two hundred feet, by Mr. Dubost, author of the picture of
Damocles, in which are introduced a correct likeness of the distinguished
frequenters of that fashionable resort, with the carriages and equipages of
most of the Nobility, and Members of the Whip Club; also a Collection of
some other Pictures, 65, Pall Mall. Admission 2s 6d. Catalogue 6d."
Please reply to me and not the list.
