I was asked to summarize for the list some of the responses to my query about metadata issues. This is quite hard to do, as there are so many aspects and the work is still in development. However, at the moment, the following issues have emerged:
Some people are lucky enough to be working with partners on purpose-designed systems for building their image databases (UWIC, working with ADLIB). This allows the creation of a Work record and an Image record for each digital image of an original work. UWIC are also using VRA Core 3. The Visual Resources Association is a good source of guidance, but you do need to be a member to join the discussion list.
TASI (helpful as always) will provide guidance on how to adapt the records in a cheaper, non-purpose-designed system, such as Extensis Portfolio, to include metadata elements for the work and the image itself.
TASI have been invited to speak to the next meeting of ACADI (Association of Curators of Art & Design Images) in late June, and some of these issues will be explored there. There is a strong sense emerging from the community that it would be useful to be starting our digital image collections with some broadly agreed metadata standards, which will stand us all in good stead in the future, when hopefully records can be shared/bought in, instead of created from scratch.
AHDS will provide advice on their application of VRA Core 3 (still to follow this up).
I was also pointed towards the Community Media Association at www.showcase.commedia.org.uk
for some agreed metadata standards for audio/visual materials. With their partners, they have developed standards for the Shared Online Media Archive (SOMA) at http://soma-dev.sourceforge.net
That's all so far,
Heather
