Culture Minister Alun Pugh today (21 April 2005) announced grants worth
£164,000 to make archives more accessible to local communities.
At the annual meeting of UK archivists in Cardiff, the Minister announced 26
grants for archive services across Wales to support archives and increase
public access.
Denbighshire Record Office receives a grant of £8, 196 to work with the
Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod and the local community to make
the historical archives of the Eisteddfod available to the public for the
first time. This important project will coincide with the 60th anniversary
of the first public meeting that proposed holding the Eisteddfod.
West Glamorgan Archive Service receives £5,362 to digitise important cine
films that provide a valuable record of Swansea in the mid-twentieth
century. Digitisation and conservation work will make these films accessible
to the public, ensuring that the people of Swansea can view this unique
record of their heritage.
The Minister said: "Archives play a vital role in preserving our cultural
heritage. It's important to invest in our archive services so that we are
able to learn from our past. This funding will go a long way to making
archive services more accessible to people across Wales. Archive services
make a great contribution to communities by preserving the history of the
local area."
