Dear Bea,
I joined in my first mail two photos showing the structures of the combustion.
The first one is the stratigraphy of the site with the numerous structures of
combustion and the second one is a zoom on one of these structures. About the
ceramic we find, we are not sure that they served for the salt water
evaporation and that is why I test other hypothesis. In addition, we don't find
a whole saltmaking pot, only big and small fragments. I have no more details
about this subject.
I have already deal with charcoals from salt spring exploitation and I am agree
with you : I don't think thath salt can affect the wood and charcoal
structures. At the moment, I have another possibility to explain the alteration
of this charcoal : the bad preservation could be linked to the variation of the
ground water level whith phases of dessication.
