> The 2005 Brogdale Lecture: Dr Rick Walden, East Malling
Research Centre Germplasm collections: linking past, present and
future Saturday, 26th November (11.30 am) The annual Brogdale
Lecture focuses on fruit collections. This year Dr Rick Walden will
consider how best to preserve variety. He will give his personal view
of the challenges faced in germplasm management, and the
increasingly important role of molecular genetics.

> Rick Walden received his PhD from the University of Edinburgh
and he has worked in the general area of plant miolecular biology
for over 25 years in the U.S., Germany and the U.K. His research
has centered on the use of GM technology in gene discovery, and
on understanding plant development. From 1998 he was Head,
Plant Breeding and Biotechnology at HRI, East Malling and he now
works as a consultant. The Lecture will be at the Linnean Society
and tea/coffee will be served in the library at 11.00 am before the
start of the lecture.
