Dear all,
I am one of those interested in using archaeological plant material
for genetic studies at the University of Basel with Stefanie Jacomet.
At Girona I told those of you present, that I am interested in
continuing ancient DNA research on archaeological Vitis finds.
Finally this wish proceeded into a first step. I found collegues at
the University of Neuchatel, Switzerland, who are currently typing
microsatellites for all Swiss grape cultivars and who are interested
to collaborate on a project using ancient DNA of archaeological Vitis
to shed light on Vitis history. A first strategy meeting will be end
of september.
I would like to know, whether anybody of you would be able and be
willing to donate vitis (Vitis sylvestris and Vitis vinifera)
samples, seeds, wood, tendrils, whatever, from European or non
European sites to be destroyed for ancient DNA research. Preservation
is favourable waterlogged or desiccated and good dating is desired.
At the moment I only need a consent from those of you interested
with some details on how many "individuals" could be given, the date,
preservation type and the provenance.
I would be very happy and grateful to all of those who are willing to
participate and help my scientific dreams to come true. I will let
you know about the proceedings and I am looking forward to any
answers. If anybody needs confirmation on my qualification to do this
work I can send our papers and some information on procedure.
best wishes
Angela Schlumbaum
