Dear list members
We are a group of Archaeologies and Materials Researchers studying metallic
artefacts.
We've colleted brass cartridges, some fired others not, in an
archaeological site corresponding to a small army post dating from
1884. They were of the type .43 (11.15x58R) Spanish Remington used in
the Remington Patria rifle
Many of them have longitudinal cracks with brittle characteristics and
two samples are broken at its junction between body and head rim
Microscopic studies revealed stress corrosion cracking. But it is difficult
to determine whether it took place when the ammunition was in use or it was
a consequence of the action the environment during more than 100 years .in
the ground
Weve found historical reports which mention cartridge failures without
much detail. We wonder if these reports are connected with stress
corrosion cracking.
WeŽd like to get historical and technical information about the occurrence
of this kind of ammo failures.
Thank you
