Dear Matthijs,
We are indeed trying to make the same thing with my colleague Aurelie Von Bibiestein from Switzerlamd on a merovegian sword.
We sampled a part of the sword and I do the metallographic study and she is now going to make some X ray tomography non destructive measurments at the same place in order to connect the information from the diffrent methods.
Indeed, actually one see "something" on the X ray tomography that could correspomd to pattern welding but it can not be linked to difference of density between steel and iron. Because this diffrence is too weak, this method can not see it. The first results of the metallographic analyses could indicate that what is detected by the non destructive method couild be (i) corrosion products, (ii) zones with high concentration of non metallic slag inclusions.
This study is now in progress, so if you have results to compare, I will be very happy
Best regards
