Thanks to all for their comments on the word clinker.
There seem to be many different uses of the word. The slag-like
residue from coal/coke fires seems to be the most widely used
meaning - with particular usage associated with the large fires
associated with steam engines (especially steam ships), although its
use in connection with smaller fires is also widespread.
I frequently find modern blacksmiths using the term to include all the
substantial solid (non-ash) residues in their hearths - whether the
residues are simply fuel residues or residues involving additions
from the workpiece/flux etc.
The use of the term within the cement industry in also interesting -
and provides many of the hits if you try "clinker" on an internet
search engine.
One of the reasons behind my enquiry was to find whether anyone
uses the term for any other sintered materials or partially vitrfied
materials; it would appear such use is not widespread.
Thanks
Tim
