Dear list members,
In forged steel parts being produced about a century ago or so, quite
frequently a thick layer (seam?) under the surface can be observed in etched
specimens which is the result of the primary manufacturing process (i.e. the
casting of steel into slabs). This layer is more or less free from slag and
especially from sulphur and therefor it is named in German language as
"Speckschicht" which may be directly translated as "bacon seam". I'm sure
that there exists another translation for this term but even in technical
dictionaries I could not find any entry. I'd be happy for your suggestions -
thanks in advance!
