Researching Violence and Conflict
Graduate student conference
9th April 2005
CSAP
Edinburgh University
What are the personal and epistemological implications of doing anthropological fieldwork in areas of violence and conflict? How does it shape the genres of ethnographic writing and framings of research 'areas' that result? How can graduate students be best prepared, both emotionally and intellectually, for the experience? This one-day research workshop brings together pre-fieldwork and post fieldwork students to discuss the representation and phenomenology of violence, both in academic and non-academic writing and engagements. It also offers a safe forum in which postgraduates can informally discuss their experiences of working in, and learning from, such conflicts. Exploring recent anthropological trends in the study of conflict and violence, we encourage participants to take innovative and creative approaches to these issues.
The workshop welcomes formal papers and shorter personal ''reflections' on the following themes:
1) The politicised nature of knowledge production about areas of conflict. How do sites get defined as zones of violence and instability?
2) How best to prepare postgraduates for research in conflict zones?
3) Working with non-academic actors in areas of conflict (the media, NGOs etc)
3) The interdisciplinary nature of studying conflict areas, working within a field which is occupied by NGOs, journalists, and activists .
4) Sharing expertise and advice on personal safety and risk assessment for fieldwork
Graduate students at all stages of their doctorate are invited to either submit papers for presentation or to register to participate. We encourage students to either send in abstracts for individual papers or to form panels on a chosen theme. Sessions are an hour long and consist of three ten minute papers. The conference fee will be £10 each, however one night's accommodation is provided. There are only 35 places available so please contact organisers as soon as attendance is known. Please fill out enclosed booking form and return to [log in to unmask] Closing date for registration is 28th of February 2005, and abstracts for papers and panels must be submitted by 10th March 2005. Limited travel subsidies are available depending on distance travelled. Papers from the conference will appear in a special issue of Anthropology Matters.
