Part-time Researchers Required:
The Centre for Applied Research in Educational Technologies at the University of Cambridge is seeking post-graduate researchers in Social Anthropology to work on projects related to:
· the reuse of teaching materials (and barriers thereto)
· the adoption of information technology to support collaborative activity within distributed research groups
The first project relates to the dissemination within the UK of teaching materials generated for the Cambridge-MIT Institute MPhil programmes. The materials include case studies (moderated by a lecturer) and electronic simulations, as well as more traditional content. Observation from other projects that offer learning materials for re-use suggests many hidden barriers hinder adoption of what on the surface would appear to be rational behaviour. This project seeks to uncover and, if possible, overcome those hidden barriers for some high-value teaching materials.
The second project concerns the use of a 'Virtual Research Environment' to support the research groups in the Teaching and Learning Research Programme (www.tlrp.org), a £25 million research programme funded by ESRC involving 300 researchers at 40 Universities. The project will assess the relevance of the VRE affordances to the needs of the various stakeholders in the programme. The technology deployed is the 'Sakai' collaboration and learning environment, an open-source platform developed by a consortium of international universities (www.sakaiproject.org) and which will be deployed at the University of Cambridge in October 2006.
We are seeking 2 or 3 part-time Social Anthropology researchers to contribute to these projects under the supervision of Dr. Patrick Carmichael at CARET. The work will be a team effort and the outputs will involve attendance at dissemination workshops and will likely be publishable. It is likely that the work will be suitable for recently graduated PhDs or graduate students with relevant experience. Salary will be at the level of £25K pro-rata for hours (to be agreed) of around 20 hours per week during a period of up to 12 months. Desk space and facilities will be provided in the CARET offices in Mill Lane, but travel within the UK will also be required.
If your field of interest covers the projects mentioned and you would like to be involved, we would like to hear from you. You will need to provide a good reference for your academic work, be outgoing and confident, and be able to work in a team. The ability to work and communicate clearly with other disciplines will be essential.
If you would like further information, please contact Dr Patrick Carmichael on 01223-765381 or [log in to unmask] To express an interest please email your c.v. and a covering letter to our Administrator, Stephanie Saunders, at [log in to unmask]
