OUT OF PLACE: Interrogating Silences in
Queerness/Raciality
24-25 March 2006, Lancaster, UK
The idea of this event comes out of a growing sense of
dissatisfaction surrounding the theorization and
politicization of queer-as-racial within and outside
academia. There have been many attempts to open up the
idea of 'queer' as being non-normatively white yet
they have predominantly resulted in the tokenistic
inclusion of 'racial minorities': for example, the
inclusion of a 'race paper' in conferences; or the few
non-white participants becoming a representation of
'multiculturalism' in any given group promoting
diversity. Whilst the move towards the inclusion of
many voices is much needed, we believe the concept of
queerness/raciality should always be interrogated
together and not as separate categories. *__*
'Out of place' aims to provide a forum where personal,
political, and theoretical experiences of
queerness/raciality come together. As the title
suggests, we wish to interrogate the different and
differing meanings, experiences, definitions and
problems of each word---'out', 'place', 'silence' and
'queerness/raciality'---through open interaction
between participants, papers and performances.
Keynote speaker: Dr. Jasbir Puar, Rutgers University
*Some of the themes we hope to explore are:*
1 Queerness: how do you think about queerness
as racialized?
2 Colour: non-whiteness and/or whiteness: what
does it mean?
3 'Passing' and 'coming out': how do you
'pass'/'out' your queerness/raciality
in different contexts?
3 Silences: how is raciality/queerness
(self)regulated or (self)imposed?
4 Places: how do places
change/challenge/stablise the experiences and modes of
queerness/raciality?
5 Fears: what are the insecurities/fears
surrounding queerness/raciality?
6 Visibility/visuality: is raciality/queerness
always about being visible/visual?
7 Queer and race theories: are there still any
bridges to cross
8 Politics: how can we celebrate and promote
queerness/raciality
We invite postgraduate students, artists and activists
to explore, perform and debate these topics. Your
presentation can take a form of 15-20 minutes paper,
poster discussion or performance OR a 10 minutes
participation in a round table.
We expect to have small funds to cover part of the
travel expenses of the presenting participants.
Further information will be provided in due time.
*Deadline for abstracts:* Please send abstracts of
200-300 words, specifying the topic and the form of
your presentation, and a short bio, *by 4 December
2005*, to Esperanza Miyake [log in to unmask]
or Adi Kuntsman [log in to unmask] .* *
* *
*Deadline for registration: *both presenting and
non-presenting participants are asked to register by
*20 December 2005*.
