PHD studentship - Organisational culture and patient safety

Applications are invited for a full-time PhD studentship based in the
Social Science Group at the Department of Health Sciences, University of
Leicester. The studentship, under the supervision of Dr Mary Dixon-Woods
(Senior Lecturer in Social Science and Health) and Professor Richard Baker
OBE (Professor of Quality in Healthcare) includes full fees at the EU/UK
rate and maintenance.
The studentship will be nested within a larger project on the evaluation of
the Health Foundation?s Patient Safety Initiative (SPI) led by Professor
Richard Lilford of the University of Birmingham. The PhD project will focus
on how organisational culture responds to efforts to ?manage? it for
purposes of improving patient safety. It will be based in the four NHS
hospitals participating in the SPI, which located in Scotland, Northern
Ireland, Wales, and England, and will involve a longitudinal multi-method
multi-site ethnographic study of staff practices and perspectives in
relation to patient safety on acute medical admissions wards.
Applicants should have a 1st or 2:1 honours degree in a relevant social
science or related discipline, and a Masters degree in a relevant subject.
Previous training in qualitative research methods, excellent written and
spoken communication skills, and superb interpersonal skills are essential.
Applicants must be prepared to travel in the UK to conduct fieldwork, which
may involve spending considerable periods at the hospital sites in the
study. Previous experience of working in the NHS as a health professional
is highly desirable, as is experience of using ethnographic research
methods.
