2nd call for papers

First of all we would like to thank the great number of scholars for their will to participate in the Congress. We are happy to announce that part of their expanses will be covered. It has been decided to prolong the deadline up to the 31 August 2005 for the many colleges around the world, who would like to participate, but had no access to the information contained in the 1st circular.

This series of conferences comprise periodic scientific meetings organized in the region of eastern Macedonia and Thrace by the “Union of students and graduates in the program of Greek civilization of the Greek Open University”. It has been decided the subject matters to be original, chronologically and geographically wide as much as possible, and susceptible of multiple interdisciplinary approaches that promote debate beyond all sorts of dividing lines. The subject of the first conference, which will take place between the 17th and 20th of November 2005 at the municipality of Soufli, Evros District, has been chosen on the basis of these criteria:

"THE PUBLIC FESTIVAL: A DIACHRONIC GLIMPSE AT ITS SOCIO-
ECONOMIC & POLITICAL ROLE"

It is about a very old social institution whose original meaning in its Greek context (ancient ðáíÞãõñéò, modern ðáíçãýñé) was people’s general assembly. It first appears as early as the neolithic times in the form of unofficial gatherings of the tribe and associated religious and commercial activities. It continuous in that way, although on a larger and conspicuous scale, during the later prehistory. Within the historical period it acquires a more concrete, institutional form.
In the Greek and Roman worlds, in addition to its nature as a festive activity serving the (personal-popular) needs for adoration and entertainment, it was elevated to a major and powerful means of propaganda and antagonism, as well as of inter-community encounters and sorting out of differences. There appears to be an uninterrupted continuity in the form and socio-economic function of the festival into the Christian era, despite the inevitable and historically moulded accommodations.
The papers’ programme is scheduled to cover the major periods of the Greek, as well as much of the world history, or geographically and historically defined cultures, such as the prehistoric and classical world (Orient, Mediterranean, Aegean), Byzantium and medieval Europe, precolombian America, ‘black’Africa, the Balkans, and postbyzantine Hellenism. The length of each talk will be limited to twenty minutes (20´). It goes without saying that the descriptive part of the papers ought not to exceed ten minutes, so that enough time is left for theoretical reflection, in line with the conference’s concerns. The proceedings will be published as soon as possible.
Those interested are kindly invited to notify the conference’s organisers ([log in to unmask], I. Dragoumi 42, Alexandroupolis 68100, Fax 003025320 22131) the aceptance of the invitation and an abstract of their paper no later than August 31, 2005. For enquiries on scientific matters you may consult ass. Professor Manolis Melas (Univ. of Thrace, Dpt of History & Ethnology, 69100 Êïmotini, Tel. 00302531039475 & 33128, 00306947579434, Fax 00302531039466, Email [log in to unmask]) The next circular will be forwarded only to those who have promptly answered the present letter.
