Assistant Professor – Tenure Track

The interdisciplinary program in New Humanities for Social Justice
(NHSJ), a department in the Division of Humanities and Communication,
seeks an Assistant Professor in Africana Studies. The NHSJ program at
CSUMB prepares students to become leaders and powerful agents of social
change in multicultural communities. Candidates must have primary
commitment to the field of Africana Studies: expertise in Africana
Diaspora histories and cultures; or critical race studies; or slavery in
the Americas. Collateral expertise in African American history and
culture; or ethnic and cultural studies; or gender and sexuality.
Candidates must have the ability to teach interdisciplinary foundational
and advanced courses in the field, at all levels; provide programmatic
leadership to Africana Studies across the campus; help develop the
graduate program in Multicultural Studies; mentor students from
working-class and diverse cultural, ethnic, and racial backgrounds;
further reciprocal relations with local communities; and demonstrate
commitment to the California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB).

An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) is required for appointment to a tenure
track position. ABD candidates may be considered.

SALARY: Commensurate with background and experience.  Position also

5.       The complete on-line application includes a Cover Letter,
Faculty Data Sheet, a CV and a list of three academic references, with
addresses, emails, telephone and fax numbers.  Applications will be
considered incomplete without the online submission.


6.       The University Human Resources Office must receive on-line
faculty data sheets with attachments by 5:00 P.M. on September 30, 2005.


·         Each document/file can be up to 5MB (five megabytes) in file
size. Only documents/files with the following extensions can be
accepted: Microsoft Word (doc.), Adobe Acrobat (.pdf), Rich Text (.rtf)
or Plain Text (.txt) files.

Hard Copy Application
1. In addition, a hard copy of a complete application packet is also
required. In order to guarantee a priority review, the hard copy
application must be sent to the Chair of the Search Committee by October
15, 2005.

2. A complete hard copy packet must include:
·         Cover letter summarizing qualifications in a manner that
facilitates review.  In particular, explain how your background and
experience enables you to contribute to the CSUMB Vision (the
University's Vision Statement can be found at:
http://csumb.edu/general/vision.html).
·         2) Curriculum Vitae
·         3) Letters from three academic references, with a list of
their names, addresses, emails, telephone numbers, and fax numbers.
·         4) A Statement of Teaching Philosophy and sample syllabus
·         5) A sample of current research or publication(s).

§         3. The complete hard copy packet and 3 letters of reference
must be sent directly to the Chair of the Search Committee:
