dear colleagues
I am an ESRC 1+3 student, currently undertaking my masters year in
the School of Social Sciences at the University of Manchester. Jerry
Johnson, a fellow 1+3 student at Manchester and I are undertaking research
into the ethnicity of postgraduate students in sociology, anthropology and
politics in UK universities. Funding is provided by C-SAP through their postgraduate projects initiative.
Jerry is proceeding to a PhD in Politics, whilst mine will be in Sociology. We are looking for a postgraduate anthropologist to join our project team too and we wondered if AM might be able to publicise this to your postgraduate student contacts. Little is known about the composition of the postgraduate student body and to the best of our knowledge there is nothing at all
discipline-specific. Whilst UK-based ethnic minorities have a higher representation
amongst undergraduates than the white population, this is not the case among doctoral students as a whole, nor among academic staff. We are aiming to examine the evidence in this area with specific reference to the three disciplines.
The project is based around secondary quantitative analysis of student data available from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA). HESA collects a wide range of data on all students registered in UK higher education institutions. The actual legwork of the analysis will be undertaken by me, with Jerry providing advice. An anthropologist would undertake a
similar role, providing a perspective. We realise that the research method we will use is not one usually employed in anthropology, but it is possible that the outcome of the research might point out some interesting directions for further qualitative work.
We are aiming to present initial results at the C-SAP conference in November and are targetting the professional association conferences in 2006 for presentation of results in each discipline. I would do the BSA and Jerry the PSA; it might be possible to present at ASA too.
In summary, we are looking for:
- someone who is a postgraduate student in anthropology in a UK higher education institution
- is interested in collaborating with us on the project and preferably:
- is a research student or will be proceeding to a research degree
- is comfortable with the method we will be using
- is based somewhere in the north west of England, if only because this would make actual meetings easier. Not essential though!
The advantages to any anthropologist taking part would be:
- experience of a funded collaborative inter-disciplinary research project
- possibility of conference presentation
- not a demanding time-commitment
- no need to have high-level quantitative skills to take part
- it's an interesting area (we think) and Jerry and I are thoroughly nice people!
Best wishes
Paul Wakeling
