Research in the new primary care environment
RHIAN HUGHES (Head of Research Management, Keele University)
Conducting research in the light of the research governance framework: issues for statisticians.
The new research governance framework and its implementation in primary care places particular challenges in the way of researchers. Rhian will outline the background to the research governance, the barriers it can place on research and examples of good practice which can be followed to ease procedures such as accessing patient data.
DAVID REEVES AND TIM DORAN (Manchester University)
The QOF quality indicators and their potential for primary care research
Under the new GMS contract for GPs, 30% of practice income depends on performance against a set of 146 Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) indicators. We describe the background to the QOF and introduce the indicators. We discuss methodological and statistical issues around the collection, scoring and use of the indicators and look at their potential use in research.
