Subject: Recommendations for a good book on multivariate analysis
Hello,
Can anyone recommend a good book on multivariate analysis, with an emphasis
on cluster analysis? I don't want an overly theoretical book but would
prefer something which gives advice on practical applications, possibly even
containing examples run in SAS.
Thanks in advance.

Subject: Book on Multi-variate Analysis
Hello Folks,
Can someone recommend a book on the theory and practice of multivariate
statistics.
Over several years I have noted that many people refer to "Multivariate
Analysis" by Mardia, Kent and Bibby (1979). Is the an updated version of the
book or an alternate that includes more recent developments.
Thankyou for your help. I will post a summary of replies to the list.
Dave.

Hi David
I don't think the Mardia book has been republished since then. It is a good
book though and you should definitely go through it. I recommend Johnson and
Wichern (Applied Multivariate Statistical
Analysis) as a complete reference for all multivariate techniques. Also
Chatfield and Collins (1980) and Manly (1986) both are simple introductory
books which could be useful.
Hope this helps,

Dear Dave,
Nice to hear from you - if only indirectly through allstat.
I would still give very high marks to MKB, though as you imply it's quite
old and - as far as I know - hasn't been updated. But I do find the clarity
of descriptions and the applications very good.
Best wishes

You'd have to ask the authors
about whether a second edition is intended.
The book by Krzanowski from OUP has been partially updated.
It is carefully written. See also
http://www.maths.ex.ac.uk/~wjk/HomePage.html
I always liked the book by Chatfield and Collins. It is
unusual in having a strongly sceptical tone and warning
against exaggerated expectations of what multivariate
methods can achieve, but it dates from 1980.
One of the best modern introductions, however, even
if you never use S-Plus and/or R, is Venables and Ripley's book.

You'll find it hard to find a single textbook covering all new/more recent
developments, from resampling/jack-knifing to Markov chain/stochastic
simulation methods. There are also more advanced methods of presenting &
explaining data in 3-D with the advent of computers, which are perhaps
'multivariate' methods.
Chatfield and Collins 'Introduction to Multivariate Analysis' is a good
clear text

My recomendations would be both books by Krzanowski:
Principles of Multivariate Analysis: a User's Perspective (1988/1990/2000;
Oxford University Press)
and
Multivariate Analysis
Part 1: Distributions, Ordination and Inference
Part 2: Classification, Covariance Structures and Repeated Measurements
(with F.H.C. Marriott; 1994/95; Edward Arnold)

Multivariate Analysis
David,
You didn't say anything in your email about your background, your area of
work, your mathematical experience, your interests or why you want a book on
multivariate analysis. All this would help in recommending a book.
If you want a non applied completely theoretical book with no practical
examples you could go for "Principles of Multivariate Analysis" by
Krzanowski. Brush up on your linear algebra first though.
You will find it a lot easier to start with these two:
"Multivariate Analysis of Ecological Communities" by Digby and Kempton.
Don't worry about the Ecological context. The methods described easily
translate to other areas of application. "Multivariate Statistical Methods:
A Primer" by Manly.
A book that I personally like very much is "Numerical Ecology" by Legendre
and Legendre. This is a pretty big book with quite a lot of multivariate
stuff in it. Again the background is ecology but the methods are well
explained and the emphasis is on making sense of, and interpreting, data. It
doesn't drone on about egenvectors and eigenvalues.
I hope this helps.
