Postdoctoral Research Assistant
£29,250 - £34,800 including London Allowance
Centre for Psychiatry
Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine
The Centre for Psychiatry, headed by Professor Stephen Stansfeld, is seeking to
appoint a postdoctoral research assistant to join the London Statistical
Genetics Group (www.mds.qmul.ac.uk/statgen) led by David Curtis and Pak Sham in
the development of new statistical methods for mapping disease genes, especially
those with complex inheritance.
The main focus of the project is to compare the performance of different methods
of detecting linkage disequilibrium between disease susceptibility loci and
genetic markers, consisting of both biallelic and multiallelic markers. Samples
for testing these methods will be generated using simulation methods but based
on real datasets available through the HAPMAP project. Established methods will
be tested and new methods will be developed and evaluated. It is expected that
the post-holder will also provide general computing support to the group,
including some data analysis and systems support.
You must be able to program in C and be qualified in statistics at BSc level or
above. You must either hold a PhD already or have submitted your thesis.
Experience in genetics and other computer-related skills would be advantageous.
The main duties will be to carry out the data simulation and analysis described
above. Programs for distribution will be written in C and/or C++, with software
development being carried out in a DOS/Windows and/or Unix environment. In
collaboration with other members of the group, you will produce scientific
papers and presentations describing and evaluating these new methods. You will
also assist in the documentation and maintenance of software distributed by the
group, including providing support for web pages and ftp sites.
