MSc in MEDICAL STATISTICS
University of Leicester, UK
The course is intended mainly for students with a good honours degree of which mathematics/statistics is the main subject,
and with a working knowledge of basic probability and statistics.
The orientation of the course is applied and vocational; it aims to produce graduates who can immediately
work as medical statisticians. While all necessary theory is covered, the emphasis throughout is on applying
and adapting it to real-life circumstances. The analysis of real data sets plays a large part in the course
and the central role of IT in implementing modern statistics is constantly emphasised. Good PC and UNIX cluster
facilities are available. Practical work makes extensive use of standard statistical packages, including SAS, Stata,
R/S+ and WinBUGS.
Medical statistics forms probably the largest single area of application of statistical theory and there is no shortage
of jobs for well-qualified MSc graduates. (See http://www.rss.org.uk/careers/. Most pharmaceutical companies have
substantial statistics sections or make use of statistical consultancy companies. University medical schools and research
units, and the NHS all employ medical statisticians in considerable numbers.
