LANCASTER UNIVERSITY
SENIOR LECTURESHIP AND 7 LECTURESHIPS IN STATISTICS
Applications are invited for four indefinite and four fixed term positions in Lancaster's RAE 6* Statistics research group within the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, UK. Lancaster already is one of the largest UK Statistics research groups with 17 academic staff, 5 research associates, 30 research students and 12 MSc students. This major new growth in posts stems from a range of successful initiatives.
Funding: Six of the lectureships result from Lancaster’s successful bid to the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) for a Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) in Postgraduate Statistics. This exciting major development provides substantial opportunities for research active staff to develop new approaches to teaching statistics both within the Department and to a wide range of disciplines at the postgraduate level. The bid provides support staff, state of the art teaching and learning spaces, and a substantial new building which forms an extension to the Department. The other two posts are to replace current staff who have had their teaching and administrative duties bought out through research fellowships.
Research and Teaching: Research activity is broad, covering theory, methodology and applications in Statistics and applied probability. A major strength of the Group is the breadth and depth of collaborative research with Medicine, Social Science, Finance, Biology, Veterinary and Environmental Science, Management Science as well as with other areas of Mathematics. Teaching reflects the research diversity, including: an undergraduate Mathematics and Statistics degree programme; an MSc programme in Statistical Science, which currently has optional schemes in Medical Statistics and Environmental Statistics; an MSc in Applied Social Statistics; and a range of collaborative teaching, including short courses with other disciplines.
All applicants should be enthusiastic teachers and should have a track-record, or clear potential, for research achievement in statistical theory, methodology or applied statistics. Additionally, those applying for the CETL funded indefinite positions should have an enthusiasm for exploring innovative statistics teaching at postgraduate level and an interest in developing new collaborations (both within Lancaster and with other institutions) to provide specialist short training programmes.
More details: The senior lectureship and three lectureships are indefinite posts. Three of the fixed term posts are for three years and the other is for one year. It is anticipated that one indefinite and one three year fixed term lectureship will have teaching responsibilities in each of the three areas: Social Statistics; Medical or Veterinary Statistics; Environmental, Financial or Management Statistics. Applicants with teaching expertise in other application areas of statistics are also encouraged to apply for these posts. The indefinite senior lectureship and one year fixed term post can be in any area of Statistics, but applications are particularly encouraged from those with research interests that will contribute to the Department’s internationally recognised strength in computationally intensive statistical methods. The closing date for all positions is the 16th June, 2005.
