== Fully funded studentships for PhD study ==
The Department of Statistics is offering postgraduate research
studentships leading to a PhD degree. The studentships, funded by the
EPSRC, are for 3.5-year study and are open to UK and EU candidates. For
home students, the grant includes full academic fees and a maintenance
allowance (tax-free) at an enhanced level: 12,000 pounds per annum plus a
discretionary enhancement depending on the project chosen and the students
background and circumstances. For EU students, only full academic fees are
payable.
Applicants should have, or expect to obtain, at least a good upper second
class honours degree (or equivalent) in mathematics, statistics or a
related subject.
Applications are invited for a PhD in any area of statistics or
probability in which there is expertise in the Department, where the main
research groups are in image and shape analysis, and probability and
statistical theory.
Possible research topics include:
Spatial-temporal modelling; Image and shape analysis; Bioinformatics; Data
mining; Inverse problems; Computer intensive methods; Wavelets;
Random media; Branching random walks; Probabilistic methods in
combinatorics; Limit theorems; Stochastic differential equations;
Stochastic financial modelling

The Department of Statistics is part of a large School of Mathematics. The
School has excellent dedicated computing resources and is adjacent to the
main Science and Engineering library. There are internal and formal
Departmental seminar programmes as well as many local RSS meetings.
Research students are encouraged to attend national and overseas
conferences as well as the Departmental annual international research
workshop (LASR).
