PhD Studentships
Department of Probability and Statistics
University of Sheffield
The Department of Probability and Statistics, University of Sheffield
(PAS) is offering at least two fully-funded PhD studentships, to start in
September 2005 (other starting dates may be possible by arrangement),
funded by EPSRC and the University of Sheffield.
The Department has an excellent research record, a large and active group
of postgraduate research students, and a highly successful taught MSc; see
http://www.shef.ac.uk/~pas/PhD/ for general background.
SUBJECT AREAS
One of the studentships, funded by EPSRC, is earmarked for Statistics. It
may be awarded in any area of statistics in which the Department has
expertise. These include Bayesian statistics, applications in health
economics, applications in archaeology, medical statistics, environmental
statistics, design of experiments, statistics of extremes, time series,
econometrics and financial applications. Details of these areas may be
found in the departmental web pages at http://www.shef.ac.uk/~pas/PhD/ and
http://www.shef.ac.uk/~pas/research/. For UK students, the maintenance
grant will be 12,000 pounds in 2005-6, PLUS an EPSRC "priority area"
payment of 3,000 pounds per annum.
There may be scope for a further award, funded by EPSRC through the
Doctoral Training Grant to the School of Mathematics and Statistics
(SoMaS), which comprises the Departments of Pure Mathematics and Applied
Mathematics as well as PAS.
There is also an EPSRC CASE studentship in collaboration with Novartis
Pharma AG, to work with Dr Jeremy Oakley on Bayesian inference for health
state utilities using pairwise comparison data. The studentship will
cover all academic fees, plus the standard EPSRC stipend (12,000 pounds in
2005-6), PLUS an industrial contribution of 3,000 pounds per year by
Novartis. For details, see the link "CASE studentship available" on the
departmental web page. Informal enquiries may be made to Dr Jeremy Oakley
([log in to unmask], tel. +44 (0) 114 222 3853, direct line).
ELIGIBILITY
Please note that as these awards are funded by EPSRC, only UK citizens who
fulfil certain residence criteria will normally be eligible for a full
award. EU citizens will normally only be eligible for an award of tuition
fees only. Applications from outside the EU are not eligible for funding.
