& Tropical Medicine, one of the largest postgraduate medical schools in
Europe, is pleased to invite applications for a Medical Research
Council-funded studentship, which will be awarded to a science graduate
for research leading to a PhD in epidemiology, nutrition or medical
statistics. The studentship will run for 3 years from October 2005 and
will provide fees plus stipend, subject to eligibility requirements.
Research in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health focuses on
issues of major public health or social importance. The Department is
multidisciplinary and encompasses epidemiologists, medical
statisticians, medical demographers, nutritionists, social scientists
and public health practitioners. The studentship is offered in one of
the following areas: Statistical methods for handling missing data
Supervisors: Mike Kenward and James Carpenter Issues in Reproductive
Epidemiology Supervisors: Pat Doyle and Noreen Maconochie Child
health and development: an international comparison of child welfare
Supervisor: Sharon Huttly Using genetic epidemiology to investigate
causal factors in preeclamspia Supervisor: Liam Smeeth Issues in
the design and modelling of Mendelian randomization studies
Supervisors: Bianca de Stavola and Dorothea Nitsch Treatment and
progress of severely malnourished children with HIV in rural South
Africa: a case-control study Supervisor: Claire Schofield

a relevant MSc, or have a combination of relevant qualifications and
experience which demonstrate equivalent ability and attainment. The
full MRC award is available to UK residents only; other EU nationals may
