I would appreciate help finding a quotation that I believe is due to
Quenouille. I do not have the exact wording, so I need the source
itself.
I believe he said, in one of his papers on the jackknife, words to the
effect that a large part of the job of statistics is the assessment or
measurement of the variance.
I have reviewed the text of several of his papers and cannot find a
quotation that resembles this, but believe I saw such a quote years ago.
